Mentor/Beginning Teacher Action Plan

FALL – YEAR ONE

Administrators who support planned, ongoing interactions between mentors and beginning teachers are facilitating professional growth opportunities for both individuals. Administrators should encourage development and implementation of action plans such as the following.

• Assist with getting supplies, filling out forms, finding the copier. Take a tour of the school/town.
• Give a journal to the beginning teacher for reflections.
• Review school handbook, policies and calendar.
• Introduce the beginning teacher to administrators, secretarial staff, custodial staff, media specialist and
other staff.
• Explain grading procedures and the budget process.
• Sign up on www.ctbest.org to receive content-specific messages from CSDE.
• Help prepare for parent/teacher conferences.
• Set up weekly/biweekly meetings with beginning teacher/mentor/support team.
• Get to know your beginning teacher. Establish rapport. Be a good listener.
• Review curriculum guides. Help identify important learning goals
• Provide help with behavior management. Share rationale for your room arrangement and classroom
management strategies.
• Begin observations. (Beginning teacher observes mentor/mentor observes beginning teacher.)
• Prepare for teacher observation and evaluation
