For Beginning Teachers and Mentors
Online Learning Units
• Web-based, discipline-specific activities and resources to help teachers connect standards and classroom practice, promote high levels of student learning and prepare for BEST portfolios.
• Provide direct links to portfolio resources and suggestions for mentoring activities. Accessed at www.ctbest.org.  Click on online learning units.

Seminars
• Discipline-specific seminars are offered locally, one in the spring of year one and two in the fall of year two.
• Seminars are facilitated by content-area experts and help teachers to develop lessons that promote conceptual learning and application, keys to a strong performance on the BEST portfolio.

 

For Administrators
BEST Elementary Administrators’ Institute
• A three-day institute offered at RESCs during the summer. However, by request, institute activities and time frames can be modified and offered in districts at any time.
• Sessions provide strategies for using BEST program resources and requirements with district initiatives to develop professional learning communities and to improve data-driven decision making, teacher evaluation, professional development, and school improvement activities.

New Teacher Induction: A Principal’s Role
• This three-hour workshop provides specific suggestions for principals to apply the information and strategies in “An Administrator’s Guide to New Teacher Induction” to their own supervision and evaluation process.

 

For Mentors needing update, Administrators, and Colleagues wishing to help beginning teachers BEST Portfolio Support Training
• This one-day focuses on resources/strategies to support a beginning teacher in the development of a learning segment to be documented in a BEST portfolio.

 

For Mentors
Mentor Seminar Series
• This three-part series is offered at RESCs from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. • Participants explore case studies, enhance coaching skills, and engage in collaborative problem solving.
• Mentors leave seminars with practical strategies and resources to use with beginning teachers the very next day.

 

For BEST-trained Mentors who are also portfolio scorers and who are nominated by their districts
Master Mentor Training
• Three days of training (October, January and May) are offered at ACES for individuals selected by districts that are committed to improving school-based induction of beginning teachers through the Master Mentor Team model.
• Training focuses on developing/implementing/assessing action plans that support district induction of beginning teachers and delivering in-district BEST training.

For exemplary Teachers recommended by districts to become mentors and cooperating teachers Initial Support Teacher Training
• These state-sponsored, three-day training sessions take place at the RESCs during July/August and October/November.
• Districts can contact their RESC BEST field staff representative to schedule in-district trainings at any time.
• Individuals must be approved by their district selection committees prior to registration.
