Things to consider:

·   Determine how you will monitor and support quality mentoring.

·   Consider how you can support beginning teachers through the “disillusionment” phase.

·   Watch for updated portfolio handbooks (CD ROMS) mailed to beginning teachers.

·   Connect portfolio process with teacher evaluation and professional development goal setting

Year-One Teachers

·   Conduct first formal observation.

·   Ensure that beginning teachers and mentors are meeting biweekly.

·   Help beginning teachers anticipate and plan for such events as open house, parent conferences, report cards, holidays (maybe via mentor)

Year-Two Teachers

·   Encourage beginning teachers to view exemplar portfolios at local RESCs.

·   Use portfolio language when holding conferences with beginning teachers, e.g., conceptual focus, students as learners, discourse, etc.

·   Identify beginning teachers’ timeframes and support needs for development and documentation of portfolio units.

·   Encourage beginning teachers and mentors to attend regional fall seminars.

·   Ask beginning teachers about new learning from regional BEST seminars.

Year-Three Teachers

Teachers with “Conditional” status

·   Meet with beginning teacher and support person after PAC to identify needs and support plan for February submission

·   Talk to mentor or RESC field staff about how face to- face or online seminars would support areas of need

·   Encourage viewing of portfolio exemplars at RESC

 

BEST Graduates

Plan ways for BEST graduates to sustain learning from portfolio process.

 

OCTOBER ~ NOVEMBER ~ DECEMBER
