The Administrator's BEST Calendar ~ Start of School

Ø

Things to consider:

·      Determine what formal support will be offered to beginning teachers in years one, two and three.

·      Host breakfast or afternoon gatherings, keeping in mind that initial “anticipation” is soon replaced by beginning teachers feeling “overwhelmed.”

·      Invite last year’s successful BEST “grads” to assist in supporting year-one and year-two teachers.

·      Assist Alternate Route to Certification (ARC) graduates in attaining required CEUs (30 over two years).

Year-One Teachers

·   Each year one teacher is matched with a BEST-trained mentor.

·   Meet with mentors and beginning teachers to share mutual expectations.

·   Conduct building-based orientation.

·   Bring teachers and mentors together to sign up on www.ctbest.org.

·   Establish/build rapport with beginning teachers through informal interactions.

·   Review and discuss district and regional support for beginning teachers.  Encourage them to attend all sessions.

Year-Two Teachers

·   Meet with teachers and support providers to share mutual expectations.

·   Match each ARC teacher with a BEST-trained mentor.

·   Match each year-two teacher with a portfolio scorer and/or grade-content colleague.

·   Differentiate support for teachers placed in unusual or changed assignments.

·   Review and discuss district and regional support for beginning teachers.  Encourage them to attend all sessions.

Year-Three Teachers

Teachers with “Conditional” status

·   Identify a support person to attend the Portfolio Assessment Conference (PAC) with the beginning teacher.

·   Plan a building-level conference as a follow-up to the PAC.

BEST Graduates
